Your favorite Apple, iPhone, iPad, iOS, Jailbreak, and Cydia site. Can Amazon Defeat Apple's iPad with $99 Kindle Fire HD?

The rumor mill set the tech blogosphere blazing this week with rampant talk that Amazon would soon roll out a $99 Kindle Fire HD, dramatically undercutting the entry price point of Apple's market leading iPad.

For many prospective tablet buyers, a $99 Kindle Fire HD might be an offer that's too good to refuse. As it turns out, however, the deal itself is what's likely too good to be true.

According to published reports Wednesday, a representative for the online retail giant and maker of the Kindle family of tablets and ereaderscalls the rumors of a $99 deal inaccurate. Although TechCunch reported the inexpensive price tag would soon manifest, a rep for Amazon tells Business Insider that buyers should not hold their breath for this.

"It's not happening--we are already at the lowest price points possible for that hardware," an Amazon spokesperson was quoted. For the time being, however, TechCrunch appears to be standing by its initial report.
